NMIS intensifies meat inspection ahead of Yuletide season

The National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) is intensifying its meat inspection and enforcement operations ahead of the Yuletide season to ensure that meat products sold to consumers are safe for human consumption.

According to Dr. Lailanie Rose P. Rico, Regional Technical Director of the NMIS Regional Technical Operations Center XI, the agency is strengthening its monitoring efforts, particularly as meat consumption is expected to increase during the holiday season.

Speaking during the Davao Peace and Security Press Corps media briefing on Wednesday morning, September 30, at The Royal Mandaya Hotel, Rico emphasized that meat products should undergo proper inspection and carry the necessary NMIS certification. SanggunihangPang-heyograpiko

She also warned the public against “hot meat,” or meat from animals slaughtered outside authorized slaughterhouses and without undergoing the required meat inspection.

From January to July this year, the NMIS has confiscated at least 2,000 kilograms of hot meat, highlighting the agency’s continued enforcement efforts against illegally slaughtered and uninspected meat products.

Rico urged consumers to check for the appropriate NMIS inspection mark or certificate when purchasing meat to help ensure that the products are safe and fit for consumption.
