NMC commends PCG response to Chinese research vessel
The National Maritime Council (NMC) on Sunday commended the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) for its professionalism and restraint in monitoring Chinese research vessel JIA HAI KE 7, which was spotted about 37 nautical miles northwest of Itbayat, Batanes, within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

The NMC said the PCG’s deployment of BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701) and other maritime surveillance assets demonstrated the government’s resolve to protect Philippine maritime rights through lawful and measured action.

It said China did not request, and the Philippines did not grant, consent for the vessel to conduct marine scientific research in the area, citing Article 246 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which requires the coastal state’s consent for such activities in its EEZ and continental shelf.

The NMC also called on China to stop unauthorized activities in the Philippine EEZ and comply with its obligations under UNCLOS, including the 2016 Arbitral Award.

The council stressed that the Philippines remains committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes while firmly upholding its sovereign rights and jurisdiction.
